Who knew Happy Birthday was so funny. I turned the camera on him and this is what happened!
Kids, student ministry, adoption, family, books I'm reading, some random things, and my realtionship with Christ. These are the things you will most likely read about here. I am just an ordinary girl trying to live the extraordinary life that Christ has called me to. Thanks for being a part of my journey to excellence.

Lessons from a child
Yesterday Reese had his first official play date. He was worn out and seemed to have enjoyed himself. I don't know about him, but mom learned a few lessons from the experience. The morning started with a visit to Dr. Johnson for a check up and blood work. My little man was such a trooper. He behaved so well. Dr. Johnson was checking his ears and was planning to check his throat. Before the Dr. had a chance to say anything, Reese opened up wide and kept saying "Ahh". It was so cute and totally caught Dr. Johnson off guard. After the exam, nurse Helen put some cream on his little arms to get him numbed up for blood work.
I am always nervous about blood work, but I was even more on edge this time (for several reasons). The child before Reese was FREAKING out. He made quite a scene and you could feel the tension in the waiting room. I just knew that Reese would follow suit and flip out. Boy was I surprised. He didn't make a peep. We laid him on the table, the nurse stuck him and it was over. She bandaged him up and we were gone without a tear.
We got in the car and headed to the mall to meet my friend Natalie and her boys. In the 5 minutes it took us to get to the mall he had stripped the bandage off. "I'm a tough guy mom. I don't need no stinking bandage!"
Lesson 1: Don't worry about what may be. Focus on the now!
The little boy ahead of Reese was probably 4 or 5 and apparently knew what was coming when he entered the lab. He was thinking about it way too much and freaked out before the nurse ever touched him. Reese, on the other hand, had no idea what was coming next. He was concerned about the cookies I was feeding him at the moment. He did not allow himself to worry about what may be coming. Because his focus was on the here and now, he didn't have any need to freak out.
Matthew 6:34 (The Message)
Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don't get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes.
After a quick visit with cousin Brant at GAP kids we headed to the play area. There was a little girl playing that looked about 2. Reese kept watching her and trying to play near her. She was a cute little girl (he has good taste). I wish I could say she was a sweet as she was cute. Natalie, Brant, and I watched this little girl shove Reese several times. This was not an accident, it was almost like she was on a search and destroy mission. My goal was to keep Reese away from her, but like most boys, he was drawn to the pretty girl.
Were I in his place, my first reaction would have been to go right back at her. I know, turn the other cheek, do unto others, yadda yadda yadda. I wish I were strong enough that those were my first thoughts. No, I don't typically act on them, but they are my initial thoughts. If you were really honest with yourself, that would probably be your initial reaction as well. Not my boy. Each time she pushed him, he would get up and giggle, then he would give the little girl the biggest hug.
Lesson 2: Love speaks volumes
I am ashamed to say that my 15 month old handles things in a more Christ like manner than I do. Somehow, I can't see Jesus shoving the little girl back. Like Reese, He would have found a way to respond in love. For Reese, the only way he knows to show love is hugs and kisses and that is exactly what he did. That little girl did not stop pushing Reese as a result of his hugs, but that didn't stop him from giving the hugs either. Christ doesn't stop loving us because we don't show Him love back. THANK GOODNESS!
How many times have I shoved Him or even spit in His face and His response was to turn around and embrace me. Like Reese's "friend", I am undeserving of His love, but how blessed I am by it.
My prayer is that I can be a little more like Reese, and in turn more like my Savior. Oh, the lessons I am learning from my little one.

Mommy help needed!
I need some advice! My little Houdini has figured out how to pull the covers out of the electric sockets. I have put a baby gate in front of them, covered them with tape, and moved furniture. All with no success. Reese has managed to figure them all out. Here is what I just caught him doing as I am writing this:

Any suggestions? Please help me before my little one shocks himself!

The Little Things
Tonight Reese and I went to the grocery store. Usually I make an effort to go when he is not with me because it is easier that way. At first he was talking loudly. I don't mind that, as a matter of fact, I think that it is sweet that he babbles so empathicly. The longer we were in the store, it turned into loud fussing. He was hungry and tired. I got to the dairy section and picked up a small can of biscuits. (By this time Reese has been fussing really loudly for 15 minutes.) I put the biscuits in the cart. He proceeded to take the biscuits out of the cart and started eating the can. EUREKA! He giggled and chewed on those biscuits the rest of the trip. I hated to take them away from him in the check out lane.
Next time you need a quick fix in the grocery store, grab a can of biscuits!

Mommy made me mad
I love magazines. We generally have 3-5 coming to our house on a regular basis. The line up of magazines has changed though. Currently, I have 3 infant & toddler related ones coming and one family related one. New issues came this week, so I skimmed one of them last night.
Several children were asked this question, "what did mommy do that made you mad?" There was one answer that cracked me up. Three year old Jason said, "She makes me poop in the potty. It's dangerous."
I am sure we will soon have our fair share of mommy made me mad stories. In the meantime, I will continue to laugh at the mishaps of others. I may regret this!

Visiting the archeologist
The week of Thanksgiving I over heard one of our students talking to his trainer. The day before he had been to the dentist. Here is how the conversation went...
Student- "Yesterday I went to the dentist and now I have to visit the archaeologist."
Trainer- with a completely straight face "the archaeologist? what are you visiting the archaeologist for?"
Student- "For braces"
Trainer- again with a completely straight face "the orthodontist?"
Student- "Yeah, the orthodontist."
Brooke & Crystal- Snickering under our breathe, trying VERY hard not to burst out laughing.
Bill Cosby was right. Kids say the darnedest things.

Product Review
Friday night we had a family get together with Bryan's family. At some point in the night, my 7 year old niece got into my mother in laws purse and found her lipstick. Her lipstick of choice: Cover Girl's Outlast All Day Color. The color: bright red.
When I saw Gailey, the first thing that I noticed was the bright red lips. Think about those old ladies who you see nothing but red lips coming and that is the color she was wearing. My mother in law swears by this lipstick. She says that she eats off every other kind.
Well, let me say that their claims are true. It doesn't wear off. It doesn't rub off and it doesn't wash off. When Gailey arrived at my house Saturday afternoon, the lipstick was as red as when she applied it Friday. Even after baking and sampling all of our goods, the lipstick still had not come off or faded. My sister in law had asked me to try to remove it with Vaseline, but I forgot. Sorry Tracy!
So, if you are looking for some long wearing lipstick... you may have found your winner.

Party Time
Saturday I hosted a Christmas party. My seven year old niece and my 11 year old twin cousins joined me for a day of holiday fun. We made cupcakes, baked cookies, decorated Christmas Ornaments, and we made a few other treats. I was really excited about this since I don't have any little ones of my own to share the fun with and the fact that my husband does not find this fun at all. As with anything, I had a plan and thought that I had it all figured out. No drama and no surprises.
Well, as usual, that is not exactly how it went. There were no major accidents, but I did learn somethings. Mostly, how different children can be, even twins.
The twins arrived first and I noticed as they edged from the steps to the door that someone had brought a big pile of mud with them. This was an unwelcome guest! My aunt also noticed the mud and told the girls to take off their shoes. One of the twins replied, "my shoes are clean, it is not me." She never even looked at the shoes. Yes, she was the culprit. She was sitting on my couch and leaned over to reach my computer when I saw the mud covering her shoes. The shoes that were now on my couch.
As you can imagine, I was a little on edge. I kept staring at the shoes just waiting for that one wrong move. Thankfully, there were no traces of mud on my slipcover. My niece then arrived and we moved into the kitchen. The girls put on the aprons that I had bought for them at IKEA (super cute!) and we began to make cupcakes.
I walked the girls through the steps and helped them measure everything out. They did so well and were so nice to each other. All three of them are very well behaved and considerate. As we were finishing up the cupcakes, one of the twins asked if she could start on the cookies. I opened the cook book to the right page and put some of the necessities out for her.
Baking Lesson #1: Follow the directions. All the directions including the order of ingredients.
All of the ingredients were measured correctly and promptly put into the mixing bowl. There was no mixing in between. That had to be the grainiest cookie mix ever. The consistency was so off that I wouldn't even consider it dough. The goo was scooped out and onto cookie sheets. These were the only flat cookies that I have ever baked. They spread out, but not up.
Baking Lesson #2: Butter Crisco is not a substitute for regular Crisco.
As I pulled out the ingredients for the icing, I noticed that the pre-measured Crisco cup was actually butter flavored. After opening it, I also noticed that the consistency of it was beginning to change. That was the grossest icing ever. Even the kids didn't want any.
Baking Lesson (and life lesson) #3: Never give kids a meat tenderizer.
We were making peppermint brickle which required broken peppermints. I put the mints in a ziploc bag and pulled out the rolling pin. (Just as the recipe said.) You are supposed to use the rolling pin to smash the mints. I don't know if the girls just weren't forceful enough or if this just doesn't work. After thinking about it for a moment, I decided to pull out the meat tenderizer and let them use it like a hammer. The good news is that it worked and we had smashed mints. The bad news is my kitchen table has some awesome texture to it now. I never even thought about that.
Baking Lesson #4: Don't just explain, DEMONSTRATE!
Once the cupcakes had cooled and the icing was mixed I put a plate out in front of each of the girls. Their cupcakes were placed on the plate with a spreader for the icing. I also put a few cans of different sprinkles on the table. The idea was for the girls to ice the cupcake and place it back on the plate and shake the sprinkles over the plate. Two of the girls did just that. One of the twins however, did not. The muddy twin chose to hold her cupcake away from the table and sprinkled right onto the floor. I then pointed out what the plate was for and she continued to shake over the floor.
All in all, it was a lot of fun and I enjoyed sharing the day with the girls. I learned a lot! As crazy as it was, I think we will try again. I even promised the girls that they could come back during Christmas break.

Dang Tistal!
For the last few weeks we have been taking care of Bryan's cousin, Lee, on the weekends. Lee lives with his grandparents where he is one of 5 children in the home. They range from 7 years to 14 months. As I am sure that you can imagine, they have their hands full. It has been fun and we enjoy playing with and hanging out with Lee. Life with a three year old is a bit crazy! We have had a lot of fun with him and we are learning a lot about parenting.
Several friends have given us things to use for Lee (clothes, toys, car seats, etc.). One friend in particular gave us some matchbox cars that her son was no longer playing with. Lee loves monster trucks and motorcycles. It just so happened that there were several of these in the bunch. I put the cars in an IKEA basket (I love IKEA) and put them on the toy shelf. Saturday afternoon, I showed Lee the basket and he started pulling the cars out. I couldn't help but laugh when he said, "Dang Tistal, you got me some really cool stuff!"
Not exactly the choice of words I would have preferred, but funny none the less.
Slowly but surely Lee is starting to warm up to people at church. He finally played with and talked to some kids at church yesterday. Normally, he stays attached to me or Taylor. In the classroom he plays by himself. He played with other kids in the class and he even hugged another child unprovoked. My friend Beth has a son that is a few months older than Lee and we have been trying to get them together. Yesterday, Lee walked right up to Kayden and started tickling him and chasing him. They seemed to be having a great time. Hopefully this means I can get him to go to class with Kayden next week. Let's pray!
Brooke and Chris are still waiting for Dillen, so please continue to pray for them.

Lessons from my 30th birthday
Wednesday was my dreaded 30th birthday. It came and went without much fanfare. (That was nice!) My aunt treated me to lunch and I enjoyed my left over birthday cake as an afternoon snack. I must give props to Bryan for the AWESOME strawberry cake with cream cheese icing! He got it at The Sweetery and it is my all time favorite. I literally could have eaten the whole half sheet cake my self. Sadly, I finished off the leftovers yesterday.
This week I went back to Calhoun where I am teaching drama for a few weeks. My 1st grade class on Wednesday was a little rowdy, so I decided to share my secret. I told them that it was my birthday and that the best gift ever would be if no one got in trouble. It would hurt my feelings so bad if I had to give out tallies on my birthday. Amazingly, it worked. The children seemed to settle down a little. Of course, this was followed by 17 children begging me to tell them my age. That would have to wait until the end of class as a reward.
Now, you all know that I have been dreading this birthday... at the end of class Natahan came and tugged at my jacket and said, "Ms. Holder, are you 40?" Are you kidding me, 40! Thank goodness he is cute, sweet, and only 6 or I may have flipped out. I told him no and he later asked if I was 30. Another child asked if I was 19. I am so glad that children really don't have any sense of age. Otherwise, this could have been devastating.
I must say that I could do without my gifts from Mother Nature. She decided to give me new hair for my birthday. Over the last few months my hair has quickly begun turning gray and in the last two weeks the texture of my hair has begun to change (not for the better). My curls are changing and I cannot control my hair. It looks terrible if I don't blow it out or put the flat iron in it. On top of all of that, I now have acne. Really, at this age! Thanks! I appreciate the thought, but you really didn't have too.
Oh well, it could be much worse. As cruel as aging seems, it is a blessing to have another day. As crummy as hormone changes are, I am healthy and happy. I can't help but think of my Uncle Bill as I talk about this. His birthday is the day before mine and he hit a milestone also, 50! This birthday was special for him. He has been suffering from colon cancer. This birthday represented much more than 50 years of life. It represented God's faithfulness. My Uncle has put this in the Lord's hands since day one and God has not let him down.
As I sit and complain about my gray and wiry hair, he arrived at my surprise party with no hair. His last round of Chemo caused the loss of all of his hair. Was he concerned...No! He is simply glad to be alive and we are glad to be able to celebrate with him.
Maybe crazy gray hair and acne aren't so bad after all!

Toddler Fun
It has been a while and I apologize. Things have been a little hectic here. I have been dealing with more stolen checks and it looks like I will have to get two more police departments involved now. That brings the total to 4 with a possibility of a 5th. This is so aggravating!!!!
We have not had any change in our adoption status. However, we have been having some fun and getting some practice. Bryan's cousin's children are currently living with their grandparents. They have their hands full with 5 children all under the age of 7 in their home. The past two weekends one of the children has stayed with us. Lee is a precious 3 year old. We have fallen in love with him!

We have fallen in love with him!
Because he lives in a home with 4 other kids, he loves the individual attention that he gets with us. He is very cute and quite funny. Last weekend we took him to Michael's Pizzeria (my favorite!) and he insists that it is Michael's Pizza Hut. I can't wait for him to meet Michael and tell him that! This weekend he went with us to tailgate at the Easley/Pickens game. Saturday, we went to Chuck E Cheese. (Maybe we can convince Michael to sing and dance so that Lee would want to hang out there.) After Chuck E Cheese we went to see "Funny Taylor" and got a really cool GAP hat. That night we ate dinner with Lee's sisters who were staying with Bryan's sister. Lee was very adamant that he was not going home with the girls. Of course he went to church with us yesterday. He was a little grouchy, but all was well after we had a little talk.
In his defense, I let him sleep 2 1/2 or 3 hours on Saturday afternoon, which meant that he didn't go to bed until after 11 and woke up at 7. I am learning though! I only let him sleep an hour and a half yesterday. We are looking forward to our next visit with Lee. We have a few things going on this weekend, so we don't know that it will work out to get him this time.
We don't know what the future holds for us or Lee, but we are excited about the opportunity to spend time with him. Please pray for us, for Lee, and his family.
*There are more pictures of Lee on my facebook page if you are interested.

Literally LOL
My husband often tells me that I am a stick in the mud and I don't think that anything is funny. Well, that is just not true. It is true that we have a very different sense of humor. We also have very different ways of expressing emotions (everyone knows that he is a major crier!). I would like to prove to the world that I do have a sense of humor.
Wednesday, my friend Brooke showed me a video someone had emailed her. This started a journey to YouTube. I must admit, this was my first real visit to YouTube. Others have shown me things on the site, but I had never gone their myself. This was quite an experience. Last night I shared my findings with Bryan. Bryan, the loud laugher, was cracking up at my finds. I also was enjoying them, however, I am a silent laugher. I can prove I was cracking up though, there were tears! Just ask him!
Anyway, I am attaching my findings for your viewing pleasure. I hope you enjoy!

Family Night
Bryan's aunt and uncle are in town from Pennsylvania, so tonight we had family night. Almost everyone participated (cousins, grandchildren, great grandchildren, etc.) so there were probably 20 to 25 of us. Most of the family met at Silver Bay for dinner followed by bowling. Bryan and I joined them at the bowling alley due to my body's severe aversion to seafood.
We took up four lanes at the bowling alley with one of them being bumper bowling for the little ones. We had 5 girls bowling on that lane with a baby brother simply watching. It was so funny to watch these girls. The tiniest of the girls was little Jessica who probably weighs 20 pounds soaking wet. To see her carrying that 6 or 7 pound ball was amazing. She was so proud of herself for hauling that thing all the way to the lane. When she would plop the ball down, it would barely roll. More than once it literally didn't roll. The first time her ball stopped mid lane, I was convinced that I would save the day and bump her ball with another ball. Boy, that was a bad idea!
I totally missed!!! I felt better when my bother-in-law missed also. This was the first of two trips that the maintenance man made to save her stranded ball. More than once Jessica tried to bowl on our lane instead of her own. Everyone was getting a little nervous due to her impeccable timing. Each time she tried to use the wrong lane someone was playing for a spare. She was totally clueless about her mistake. The second time, I pointed out the bumpers to her and told her that they would help her ball stay of track and knock the pins down. If she would look for the bumpers she would know she was in the right lane.
Isn't it funny how God does that for us. He puts bumpers (guardrails) in our path everyday. If we will just stay between those rails, we will have a much greater chance of hitting the target. Those boundaries protect us just like those guards guide the ball. Sometimes, we just need someone to point the boundaries out to us. Why is it that we get so bent out of shape when we are given boundaries? We get even more bent out of shape when we have to try again. Our childlike faith should push us to try again, to seek out the excitement of a new experiences.
Each time Jessica got up she was so excited. She didn't care that she only hit one pin or that she hit 5 or 6, or even none. Her exuberance never changed. As the night went on, she got some coaching and figured out how to roll the ball rather than her original throw and plop technique. She got much better results! She was sure that it was great no matter what she did. Oh to have childlike faith and wonder!
Kids never cease to amaze me and teach me more than I could ever teach them. And they say the craziest (and sometimes most inappropriate) things. Take for instance my niece tonight. Gailey greeted my sister-in-law with this, "Linda, did you know I had diarrhea today?"

Why I love children...
This Saturday I visited my wonderful hair stylist, Erin Brown. She did a great job on my hair and I am a little sad that I can't quite recreate it myself. (I did get a little coaching though.) Every time she does my hair, I get an endless stream of compliments. Since I don't wash my hair every day (I know you think that is gross, but trust me, it works best for me.) my hair still looked good on Sunday.
Sunday morning I got up and made my way to church. When I arrived I went to my classroom and prepared for my 2 and 3 year olds to arrive. I love my class and each week there is a new adventure! There is one little boy that holds a special place in my heart. He is absolutely beautiful. He is tall and athletic looking already! His hair is white blond and he has the sweetest face. Someone said he looks like a Ralph Lauren model and that is 100% true. Drew is also quite smart and sweet! When he came into class I sat down at a table with him and began to play. Drew looked up at me and said, "I like your new hair cut." A 3 year old!!! Sometimes my husband doesn't even notice my hair cuts. For this little fella to recognize that I got a hair cut and to say he liked it amazed me.
I did not get to see Drew's mom, but when I do, I can promise you that I will thank her for teaching her son to be so thoughtful! He is going to make some girl a great catch one day.
